Kererū Characteristics

Task Description: I am currently learning more about the kereru because it is the bird of my reading group. I was also told to learn more about the bird to see what characteristics me and the bird have in common.  One of the characteristics me and my bird have in common are the fact that we often keep to ourselves or in small groups/ pairs.

In this task I have made a small DLO with facts and characteristics about the kereru bird. I have done some research for a night or 2 after school daily, I used google and some article sources to get my information.  I have learnt lots about the kereru bird and have enjoyed researching multiple facts about them.

Social Media Explanation

Task Description: I am currently learning the structure of an explanation writing piece and how to organise my paragraphs into neat and tidy topics. I first wrote this piece of writing in my writing book though I am not too good at writing in my writing book. so I finished it in my writing book and then re-wrote it in a google document and typed it out, then I added a few changes. I added more sentences and even another paragraph as I thought it was missing a few bits of information.

The reason I have blogged this quite late is because I am quite slow at writing in my writing book. this is because I like to have my handwriting neat and I also have to brainstorm for ideas on the spot which makes it quite time draining.  Then I had to re-write it into a google document as you wouldn’t be able to read it off my blog ,soon after I re-wrote it I made big changes to it as well.

Eruera Maihi Patuone

Task Description: In this task i have been learning more about Eruera Maihi Patuone who was one of the first rangatira to sign the treaty of Waitangi.  I wrote a longer and more in depth summary than I usually would do. I read the whole biography about  Eruera Maihi Patuone. This man has a whole biography written about him because of the fact he was an important connection and bridge between the Maoris and foreigners in Auckland. This biography was written about him also because of the fact he was a well known peace keeper and important to multiple governors.

I enjoyed this text quite a lot as it was in depth and explained the history really well. It explained multiple events and all the important things about him such as who he was and multiple other details. The biography of Eruera Maihi Patuone was told by his great-great-great-great grandson Fraser Smith. I have written a summary about it and labelled each paragraph based on which pages it summarises. There is also a QR code of me reading page 5 for this book. I stumbled quite a lot but in the end I got there.

Treaty of Waitangi Explanation -2026

Task Description: I have been learning to use explanations to organise and explain the context of my writing. For the past 1-2 weeks My class has been working on writing explanations writing pieces and organising our writing, so that our writing makes more sense and gets a better flow. I started writing this explanation last week  because last week was the week when Waitangi day came around.

It took me a while to finish this as I wanted the structure to be as best as I could get it, it also took slightly long because I have been re-writing and re-reading my text multiple times. I have tried my best to make my ideas clear and solid in my writing.I have taken screenshots of the doc and paragraphs and I turned them into a DLO or digital learning object.  At the top I added a text box to add information and state what my explanation includes , on top of the little information blurb I of course added the title and a few decorations to make it attractive and look fun to read.

Anniversary Disaster (Flood)-2026

Task Description: I have been writing an explanation story based on the anniversary weekend flooding and landslides. I have been learning how to explain and organise my ideas in explanation writing. I have been working on this piece of writing for around 3-4 days  this week. I have tried to make it as organised as possible, though I still think my conclusion needs slight work on it.  I have tried to include lots of simple facts as well as when it happened and where it happened.

It took me a while to be happy with my writing because I couldn’t properly place my ideas into place at first. Though in the end I managed to organise all of my ideas into good paragraphs that I was finally happy with. I learnt a lot about natural disasters while writing this, which in my case is a good thing because I am always open to learning about things I wonder about. I hope this also helps you feel alert about natural disasters as well.

Kea facts and information- Kick start SLJ

Task Description: In this task I have done another SLJ task for Nz birds, The bird I did was the kea! I didn’t blog much last week as the whole week I was very busy so I had to do this activity today to try and catch up a little bit. I plan on blogging (or simply trying) one blog post a day or even both activities for this week.

This activity didn’t take me long as I simply typed facts down about the kea ( in my words of course) and added a picture of the kea itself. I also Included a little appearance description next to the picture of the kea I had included. I read a bit about the kea to do this as well as watched a video based on the kea to find facts about it. My favourite fact would be that scientists think that keas can be as smart as 4 year old children. That is my favourite fact because my sister is 5 so if we had a kea it would be very interesting to see if they would learn off each other.

keas are often known based off their intelligence, which makes sense as they are a type of parrot and parrots are initially known to be smart. I find parrots like the kea very interesting as they are very smart that even scientists say that they are as smart as children, which makes me wonder how it occurs.

Create a dinosaur SLJ

Task Description: In this task I have been working on creating my own dinosaur on a website. This is only the kick start activity for this section. I have never had too much interest in dinosaurs or species like them, Though I do agree they are very interesting and mysterious as I wasn’t alive to ever live in their presence. Dinosaurs are not fully discovered for who they are and remain a mysterious piece of history for the world.  Scientists and many more people try to dig up and find the full answer and explanation to dinosaurs, though they haven’t found every secret yet.

In this task I have made a dinosaur of my own, I haven’t named it yet as I do not know what to call it. I mixed and matched other dinosaur parts and even added wings and gave it some colour as well. It was pretty easy to do as I got it done in like under 5 minutes or so. I was pretty indecisive with the background as I didn’t like most of the backgrounds I had to choose from.

Trading card- SLJ

Task Description: In this task I have tried my best to create a Pokemon trading card based on the maui dolphin. There was a template for this so I made a copy and followed the instructions to make a Pokemon trading card. This didn’t take me much time to do at all It was pretty easy. I used a few shapes and text boxes, as well as using google images and real Pokemon cards for reference.

I didn’t do many posts this week because my family was pretty busy and we had guests  over once or twice and we went out nearly every day so it was a pretty busy week. I managed to get my second post for this week done though, later if I am lucky I might even get a third blog post squeezed in. My Pokemon trading card which I have made earlier is below from this text.

What if story- SLJ task

Task description: Yesterday I finished another SLJ task but didn’t have the time to blog it before my bedtime. This was a very easy task to do as all I needed to do was write a remake story of the story about how kiwi saved the forest, but instead kiwi didn’t save the forest. I have made my story to have kiwi  extinct instead of saving the forest. This is my remake of the story though I would like to give credit to  Andre Ngapo for retelling the story/ myth and Isobel Joy Te-Aho White for illustration.

I really enjoyed this task Because I generally enjoy writing stories and learning new vocabulary and grammar to add to my knowledge which is why I enjoyed this task. I also have a habit of summarising a book or writing fan-fictions after reading the book so this task was good fun for me in general.  The first paragraph is just stating the purpose of this story and what would happen in my short story.

Weta warrior -SLJ step it up

Task Description: I have finished the first blog post for this week, which is the weta warrior step it up challenge for the summer learning journey activity. I didn’t do kick start activity this morning because I was busy this morning redaing A new book I had purchased. This task was all about wetas or the demon grasshoppers. I had to design a piece of armour for one of the wetas. Such as a helmet or a leg piece.

In the blue print I included of my helmet I said the type of material was going to be metal, which was only as a metaphor since I cannot actually weld a piece of armour. I only said that to be a reference for  real life armour I have seen online.  The red dots by the eye holes are the ones I meant to attach to the main head piece. I would have made it able to move up and reveal the wetas face but i did not have any time to do so.  If i did have to make the face piece movable I would  attach a tooth pick under the main piece but  only glue a bit on each side of the tooth pick. Then I would attach the face piece onto the tooth pick so It can flip upwards.
